How it works and what to know

From excluding to including: the VAT amount is the amount times the rate. At 21% on 100.00 the VAT is 21.00 and the total is 121.00.

From including to excluding: divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 21% you divide by 1.21. The VAT amount is the difference between the total and the amount excluding VAT.

Several lines with different rates? Add lines: VAT is calculated per rate over the sum of the amounts and rounded to whole cents (half up), like on an invoice.

Indicative, not tax advice

These tools give an indication and do not replace advice from an accountant or the tax authority. Rules can change and differ per situation and per country.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate VAT on an amount excluding VAT?

Multiply the amount by the VAT rate divided by 100. On 250.00 at 21% the VAT is 52.50, so you invoice 302.50 in total.

How do I take the VAT out of an amount including VAT?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate (at 21% that is 1.21). That gives the amount excluding VAT. Subtract it from the total and you have the VAT amount.

Which VAT rates apply in the Netherlands?

The Dutch Tax Administration lists the standard rate of 21%, the reduced rate of 9% and 0%, besides exemptions. Which rate applies depends on what you supply. See the source below this tool.

Why does my result differ by a cent from another calculation?

That is rounding. This calculator rounds to whole cents (half up) and calculates VAT per rate over the sum of the lines. Another method, such as rounding per line, can give a one cent difference.

Can I use other countries and rates?

Yes. Choose another country and type your own rate, with up to two decimals. The calculation is the same, but the rules on which rate applies differ per country. Always check them with that country’s tax authority.
